DNA Lockup

Since I was 13 one thing that I have always been interested in is forensic science. Forensic science is defined as the application of natural science to matters of law. When I watch a TV show like Law and Order I don’t focus on who committed the crime. Instead I look at how the crime was committed for example if someone breaks into your house what kind of tool was used and what kind of mark was left by the tool, also what was taken. Observations like that can lead to major breaks in cases like determining motive. One major aspect of forensic science is DNA. Since everyone’s DNA is different this is the best way to catch a criminal. You can collect DNA from hair follicles, blood, saliva, skin, bones, and fingerprints In 1953 Rosalind Franklin discovered the double helix structure of DNA, however DNA for forensics wasn’t used until the early 2000’s. That is due to that fact that the technology to test the DNA was not available. After the technology was discovered forensic DNA still faced one major setback. People were concerned about the credibility of the DNA analysis. This setback would make or break the use of forensic DNA. Although it took a while for courts to accept the science behind DNA analysis it is now one of the first things police and investigators look for when solving a crime.
