93% Believe Women Aren't Meant to be Scientists in China

Scientists are viewed primarily as men, but society is changing to accept women scientists or at least I thought so until I read this very article. I was shocked to read that L’Oreal’s study proved that “67% of Europeans think that women do not possess the required skill set in order to achieve high-level scientific positions.” If you thought 67% was high, “in China an absolutely staggering 93% believe that women aren’t cut out to be scientists.” These numbers are breathtaking, for the article states that women are accepted, capable, and skilled in other professions except in science. This article expresses how women in science do have the skills to be scientists and that it is silly for someone in this day and age to discriminate due to sexism. People believe there are more female scientists than there really are, when truly only 11% of women are at the top of their scientific professions. Parents and teachers tend to stop encouraging their children and students to pursue a science career at only the age of 16. This is preventing many young women from following a career in the sciences because of sexism. Just because others believe that women do not have the skill to be a scientist, no less any other profession, this should not stop girls or women from working hard to achieve a goal. There will always be someone who disagrees with what women can do or can’t do, so try to change the way our generation views women in science. We encourage more people to stop crowds of people who do not believe a women is likely to succeed. These depressing statistics and opinions hopefully open your eyes to remember women’s potential and skill to become a successful scientist.
