Caroline Dean, a Plant Biologist, wins the Women in Science award in Europe

The increase of women in science has been seen with all the awards given to women making a step towards improvement. In Europe, specifically the United Kingdom, a plant biologist named Caroline Dean won the Women in Science award from the EMBO and the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS). She is being rewarded for her research in how to understand how changes in temperature affect the molecular events that have command over the timing and duration of flowering in higher plants.

Caroline Dean has studied at NYU where she obtained a PhD. She has done research in advanced genetics, as well as starting many organization, such as the International Society for Plant Molecular Biology and European Plant Science Organization. She has also won other awards, such as the Genetics Society Medal in 2002, the Order of the British Empire Award in 2004, and in bioscience the BBSRC Excellence award in 2014.

Joanne Chory, a colleague of Caroline’s has said "Recognition of Caroline's contribution is timely and forward-looking because of the many challenges for agriculture in the face of climate change." The work that Caroline has put forth has helped plant research grow and bring in new ideas. Caroline Dean’s reply to the reward is, "I am absolutely delighted to have been selected for this award and would like to give credit to the fantastic PhD students and post-docs who contributed to all the projects in my lab."

Congrats to Caroline Dean on her accomplishment and her step forward for all women.
